With school underway, Syracuse University’s Orange After Dark fall movie lineup will take place at  HBC lecture hall every Thursday through Saturday at 11 p.m.,  starting with Disney’s 2019 remake of it’s animated classic “Aladdin.”

“We chose Aladdin because Disney throwback movies have traditionally done well for us,” said Courtney Jones, associate director of the Office of Student Activities. “My theory is that college students like anything that reminds them of being a child. Maybe it’s that adulthood is looming and so is the ‘real world’ and so it’s fun to escape and reminisce with movies that remind you of a simpler time.”

Aladdin tells the story of a young thief, played by Mena Massoud,  who finds a genie’s lamp in a cave and uses it to win the heart of Princess Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott. However, the villainous Jafar, played by Marwan Kenzari is on to Aladdin’s plan and wants to nab the genie, played by Will Smith, for himself to take over the kingdom. Very little is changed from the animated movie’s story, but there are some welcomed additions in the remake. There is a new song for Jasmine, additional action scenes, and a few line changes to make the film more culturally acceptable.

“I think it’s a great option for people looking for something low-key to do on weekends,” said Jones.

Admission for the movie is free and includes snacks.
