Chancellor Kent Syverud has created a working group to consider revisions to SU’s computer and electronic policy that will address concerns regarding free speech on campus, according to a Syracuse University News release.

David Rubin, a communications professor and dean emeritus in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, will lead the working group. The group was created in response to resolutions passed by the Student Association and the Graduate Student Organization in the fall that said SU’s current policy is vague, broad and stifles academic freedom.

“I agree that there is no room for ambiguity when it comes to our institutional commitment to freedom of expression, and I am confident that this working group will help to ensure our policies fully reflect that commitment,” Syverud said in the release.

The group will be comprised of two students appointed by SA, two students appointed by the GSO and one faculty and staff member, who will be appointed by the University Senate, according to an SU news release.

The working group will report back to Syverud after it reviews the policy concerns raised in the resolutions, according to the news release.
