Hickey misses majority of Syracuse loss due to leg injury

Syracuse suffered arguably its worst injury of the season Saturday when left tackle Sean Hickey went down with what appeared to be a knee injury.

Center Macky MacPherson rolled backward onto Hickey during the Orange’s second drive and the hobbled Hickey was helped off the field and into the locker room. He was listed as having a lower-body injury and did not return.

“We lost Hickey. Damn good football player,” SU head coach Scott Shafer said.

Shafer did not comment on Hickey’s status moving forward, but the tackle has had surgeries on both knees since coming to SU. Hickey’s replacement, Michael Lasker, struggled to keep Pittsburgh’s defensive linemen out of the backfield.

“There’s not much of an adjustment to make, Sean’s a great player,” MacPherson said. “With a guy like Michael Lasker stepping in, we have faith in him.”

Hickey wasn’t the only player to go down for Syracuse, which has already lost a slew of starters and contributors this season. Marquis Spruill missed time with an apparent neck injury while Ri’Shard Anderson and Ron Thompson were also banged up on the same play.

The injury bug has not been kind to the Orange this season. And an unavailable Hickey for SU’s must-win season finale against Boston College next Saturday would be teetering on disastrous.
